Language
With Abilities Builder language programs you significantly raise the rate
of basic academic skill development using subject materials you
want the student to learn. So reading, spelling and
writing skills improve while the student is learning the subject
materials. You teach your subject
materials the way you normally do and use Abilities Builder to
reinforce what you have taught. All you need to be able to do is
type in or copy-and-paste words and sentences from the subject
materials. Abilities Builder does the rest.
Your subject materials are delivered in the form of motivating
and effective exercises that are guaranteed to improve retention
and basic skill development in reading, spelling, and written
expression at rates never before achieved.
Here is an example showing the
two methods for creating a spelling sentence list:
1) You type sentences
directly. (picture)
2) You type sentences into your
word processor or copy-and-paste them into the word processor
from another text source. You then check the spelling. (picture) Next, you copy the
sentence (picture) and click on the text box (picture) and select 'paste' to paste.(picture) The
sentences are now in the text box. When you press the Accept
Sentences button you receive confirmation that the sentence list was successfully
created. (picture)
When students work on the
exercises for the sample sentence list that has been created,
they preview all the sentences, one at a time, as
Peedy* reads them.(picture) Peedy* will repeat a sentence by pressing the
Repeat Current Sentence button. The student then selects the
level of difficulty and begins. After the Display Sentence button
is pressed, for levels 1 through 4, the sentence will appear
randomly in the upper text box for the time interval that you have preset.
(picture) After that interval has elapsed in Level 1, (picture) the vowels will
disappear and the student is required to type in the complete
sentence in the lower text box. (picture) Peedy* will repeat the
sentence at any time if the Repeat Sentence button is pressed. If
an error is made,
the student can see which characters are incorrect and try again. (picture)
In Levels 2 through 5, the student
is given an opportunity to demonstrate increasing levels of
visual memory:
In Level 2, consonants disappear. (picture)
In Level 3, all characters disappear
leaving underscored spaces.(picture)
In Level 4, all characters disappear
leaving no visual clues.(picture)
In Level 5. Peedy* reads the word, but
the word does not appear in the upper text box. (picture)
Word lists, punctuation and capitalization sentence lists, and matching tests are created and worked in similar ways.
Using
this method of teaching has very significantly improved long-term
retention of subject materials as well as basic academic skill
development for countless individuals. If a student is able to
use a computer and keyboard, this method is guaranteed
to work for all students, regardless of age, grade, or ability level.
Math
Abilities Builder math programs will take a student with
absolutely no math computation skills to a point where he is adding,
subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers and fractions with
unprecedented levels of speed and accuracy.
Whole number addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division become an arduous chore
for those who have not mastered the math facts. This is why all
whole number math programs include a math facts module. The fact
is presented while Peedy reads the fact.(picture) If the user enters the correct answer, Peedy* gives
positive feedback and the next fact appears. (picture) If the answer is incorrect, the correct
answer appears below and Peedy* recites the fact and the correct
answer. (picture) The user is required to type in the correct answer before he can
move on to the next fact. (picture)
After math facts are mastered
the student is ready to go on to whole number math problems. Instead
of presenting a problem and merely requiring a correct answer,
problems are solved number by number as you would using pencil and paper. (picture) The student can
see where errors are made in the process of solving a problem and
is given the opportunity to make corrections.
Abilities Builder fraction
programs are similarly designed. First the user is trained to
efficiently reduce fractions. Notice in this shot, which is the easiest level, the
GCF '2' is revealed in a box above the equal sign. (picture) This is an
optional help feature for students who need it. Then students are
trained to change fractions to mixed numbers (picture), and mixed numbers to fractions. (picture)
After the above fraction skills
are mastered, the student is ready to work with fraction
problems. Addition and subtraction of fractions
for like and unlike denominators are randomly generated on three
different levels of difficulty.
Here is an example of the addition of mixed numbers
with fractions of unlike denominators. The user has entered the
first digit of the LCD and is now prompted for the second digit. (picture) In this shot,
the user has correctly entered the second digit and the LCD is displayed in both fractions. (picture) the numerators. After
the numerators are correctly entered, the user is prompted to add the numerators. (picture) After he does, he will
need to simplify the fraction, step by step, to arrive at
the final answer. (picture)
